Ocean Tunnel Live Paint Fundraiser at Quartyard!

This “Live Paint” event is a fundraiser for the largest art installation from the San Diego community headed to Burning Man this year. The piece is called “Ocean Tunnel” and it’s a 200′-long, 8′-tall tunnel filled with murals that convey how open ocean ecosystems are shifting due to climate change and unsustainable fishing practices. The piece is split into eight sections, and over the course of these 3 days artist Mark Dugally ( will paint the artwork for one 24′-long section of the tunnel.

Between June 27 and June 29, Mark will have his canvas set up in the outdoor space at Quartyard. The space is open to the public who are welcomed to watch him create! Members of the Ocean Tunnel team will be set up nearby to share about the project and the science behind the piece. They will also be collecting donations and selling tickets for a raffle of a variety of goods and services from local vendors. All proceeds will be used to purchase materials and infrastructure for this 100% volunteer-based effort!

On the final day of the event (June 29, 4p-10p), Ocean Tunnel will partner with Quartyard to produce their monthly neighborhood party. There will be music, food, drink, face-painting and henna, live silk-screening, a photo booth, Poi and Hoop spinning performances, and more! The event is free and open to all — come out and support local art and ocean conservation!

Build Day #6

Hi everyone —

After a brief hiatus, we’ll be back at Colab (6061 Fairmount Ave, San Diego, CA 92120) this Saturday, May 19th, from 10am-3pm to continue prepping canvas for Ocean Tunnel. This time, we’ll also have a primed section of the canvas set up for members of the Colab community to contribute their artistic skills and cover it with jellyfish!

Please wear old clothing to paint in and bring a water bottle. If you have paintbrushes, 1/2″ grommet tools, or sewing skills/equipment, please bring those along as well. I recommend labeling personal gear so that it can find its way back to you if misplaced 🙂

Hope to see you all soon!

Build Day #4

Hi Ocean Tunnel Lovers,

Thanks to the friends — new and old! — who came out for our build last Saturday. We’re really moving along on the canvas priming and there’s so much enthusiasm and energy in the air at Colab these days!

Our next Community Build Day is this Sunday 4/29 from 10am-4pm at Colab (6061 Fairmount Ave; San Diego, CA 92120). If you plan to come, wear old clothes to paint in and if you have extra paintbrushes or 1/2″ grommet tools please bring them along.

Love OT Team

2nd Build Day and Project Coordination Meeting

Thanks to everyone who came out to TG on Friday and/or our build day on Sunday. We made lots of progress (and had lots of fun, too!). There’s still lots more to do, so we’ll be having our second build day this Saturday 4/14 from 10am-3pm at Colab (6055 Fairmount Ave, San Diego, California 92120).  We’ll continue our work to prepare and prime canvases for murals–come join us and get your hands dirty!

Our first project coordination meeting will be held from 6:30-7:30pm TONIGHT, April 10. For those who want to meet in person, come to  Maddie’s house (1754 Redondo St, San Diego, CA 92107) between 6-6:20pm. For those who want to call in remotely, details about how to join the conference call are included below. We’ll use this call as an opportunity to update everyone on the status of the project and to identify people’s interests in order to form teams. We’ll keep the call to less than 1 hour.

Finally, WE would be very grateful if you all could share our material on social media and especially the link to our donation portal. We have a grant through SDCAP, but those funds are only unlocked as outside contributions come in. Right now a personal donation of $50 becomes $100–help us reach our goal!!

  2. Emerald Kingdom Greenhouses has generously offered to donate the greenhouse infrastructure we’ll use in BRC. Thanks EKG! You guys Rock!
  3. Talented architect and general badass Derek Lange has contributed an incredible new exterior design for Ocean Tunnel. Check out the new drawings here!
  4. We submitted our final round application to BMorg for the BRC Honorarium. Fingers crossed!

Lots of love from the OT team — looking forward to a great year!

We’re building at CoLab!
